Activities that Comprise this Project:

Project 2 - Communicating With Patients

Introduction

The class project is for groups of learners to develop a care plan for a patient with multiple issues. Several groups will take the perspective of a nurse in an acute hospital situation. However each patient will have a different set of medical issues. Other groups will take the perspective of a community nurse and will develop a care plan for a recently released patient who is at home. The groups will research the medical issues of their patient, develop a care plan, and develop a multimedia presentation talking about their patient and care plan to the rest of the class.

Another option is have each group research the following related topics: to Nursing Care Plan defined, Purpose of a nursing care plan, Care Plan format, Sample of a Care Plan with Explanation and Helpful Resources.

The intent of this document is not to give a lesson plan, many of which you can find by using Google search. The intent of this is to give a few examples of using Web 2.0 tools. Integrating Web 2.0 tools can increase communication and deeper learner engagement. Finally, the tools facilitate interaction and collaboration through the web and provide for asynchronous and synchronous communication.

Other Ideas that could be used as projects:

  • Class encyclopedia: Ask your class to create an "encyclopedia" on a topic, adding useful information that can be built upon through the years.
  • Nursing vocabulary - Glossary: Get your class to create a glossary of terms they use and learn about in new units, adding definitions and images.
  • Classroom FAQ: Make it a class project to create an FAQ for your classroom that will help new students and those that will come in years later.

Tasks should:

  • Be based on authentic source material
  • Involve learners in solving problems and reaching conclusion
  • Use a variety of resources
  • Enable learners to share in the planning and developing of tasks

Learners can:

  • Increase language skills in all four strands
  • Work in groups to create a presentation
  • Use language for authentic purposes
  • Learn in cooperative interaction
  • Expand content information by being involve in a variety of tasks
  • Use technology to make learning even more dynamic

Preparation

  1. Divide class into groups to research one of the following related topics:
    • Nursing Care Plan defined
    • Purpose of a nursing care plan
    • Care Plan format
    • Sample of a Care Plan with Explanation
    • Helpful Resources
    • Research content information regarding care plans
  2. Find some patient profiles or case studies online:
  3. Create a blog if desired (See example):
    • Use to store class documents
    • Use to organize portfolio
  4. Master Web 2.0 tools first as an instructor and then to ensure learner mastery of same
  5. Share information/documents using Dropbox

This next section has been divided into the following categories:

  • Tools To Introduce the Project
  • Tools to Support Text-Based Communication
  • Tools to Support Audio-Based Communication
  • Tools to give Multimedia Presentation

Tools To Introduce the Project

Flisti

Another idea - take a weekly poll of any current subject! Have the learners gained mastery?

Fluidsurveys

  • Assess the class's prior knowledge. Instructors can created a survey such as this example

Wallwisher

This tool can be used for the following ideas in this class project:

  • Track group progress as to amount of project completed (project milestones)
  • Collect important links related to the topic
  • Log progress in the project

Quizlet

  • Introduce new vocabulary and review
  • Flashcards can be created by the instructor or by the various groups
  • Vocabulary should fit the group's topic
  • Example: Medical Terminology Abbreviations

Tools to Support Text-Based Communication

Blogger

Diigo

Use this Social Networking bookmarking tool as follows:

  • Assist learners to select and save URLs related to Nursing care plans, describe pages and add tags
  • Bookmark information from reliable sources and sharing that information, beyond the simple
  • Bookmark most the appropriate blogs related to the curriculum content.
  • Present bookmarks on information researched on the internet
  • Set up working groups for research purposes and developing projects

Wikispaces

Create a wiki as a place to store resources:

  • create a vocabulary, grammar or whatever depository
  • summarize lessons for learners; create study guides

Use wikis for these other ideas:

  • embed a video with accompanying comprehension questions
  • embed an audio-recording with script
  • Introduce concepts by posting on wiki
  • post authentic materials (e.g. newspaper article)
  • Save links, class handouts, etc.

Create a wiki for Group Projects:

  • Collaborate notes using the wiki
  • Create one page per learner/ group on the wiki to collaborate on a project
  • Create project document together using the project wiki; track projects

Wordle

  • Use word-cloud to review to introduce vocabulary.
  • Use word-cloud to write a paragraph
  • Use word-cloud to predict what the text or reading will be about
  • See example:

This wordle was created from this webpage

Text2Mindmap

  • Create this visual tool to show how ideas are interconnected. This will help the learner to easily recall important information.

Tools to Support Audio-Based Communication

Podcasts

  • Podcasting is an efficient method of sharing lectures, instructions and information.
  • Podomatic.com is a place to store the podcasts generated by the instructor or the class. An audio-recording or screencast needs to be made first before posting on the podcast channel.
  • Example at: “Creating a Portfolio

AudioPal

  • Create an audio-recording using the "Text to speech feature" in this tool. One possible script for the audio recording is to talk about what a care plan is. This is an example

Voicethread

  • Post a photo for the portfolio so that classmates can comment on the pictures using voice or text. Use the tool as a springboard for writing. Groups could create a voicethread presentation with embedded images, text, audio and possibly video.

Screencast-O-Matic

  • Use this tool for presentation purposes as an instructor or as a class group. Recording what is on the screen and adding audio is helpful in clarifying thoughts and organizing information. It can also be used as a “trial run”.

Tools to Make the Multimedia Presentation

Encourage students to prepare an effective multimedia presentation. The class has already brainstormed a list of techniques to persuade their audiences. Visuals and presentations are an effective way to do this as our brain remembers images better than it does text. Integrate the following criteria of effective multimedia presentations:

  • Catchy grabs the audience's attention, appeals to the target audience
  • Concise requires as little reading as possible, incorporates graphics, audio, video with text
  • Comprehensive presents all the key information (e.g., stakeholders, interests, issue, relevant data)
  • Convincing makes viewers believe that the information in the presentation is important and believable.

In addition to the content chosen to include in your multimedia presentation, consider how to present this content most effectively for your audience.

Prezi

Use this online presentation tool in a number of different ways by instructor as well as learner. The learner can build a presentation of his portfolio and invite other classmates to edit it. This could also be embedded in their blog. See example.

Screencast-O-Matic

Use this tool for presentation purposes as an instructor or as a class group. Recording what is on the screen and adding audio is helpful in clarifying thoughts and organizing information. It can also be used as a "trial run" before the final presentation.

Wikispaces

  • Use the wiki as a central repository for all learners to refer to
  • Enable all learners to contribute links
  • Assign one page to each group as part of the final presentation
