Environmental Issues - Global Warming

“Environmental Issues - Global Warming” is an activity using RSS feeds to keep current in one's profession. RSS Feeds assist learners to organize and streamline the abundance of engineering content on the web.

Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  • Focus on critical thinking skills while using RSS feeds
  • Remain updated on occupation content and news on professional and English language news and activities
  • Access feeds selected by classmates (in addition to the instructors list)
  • Place RSS buttons on class websites (wikis) in order to accomplish this

Preparation:

  • Be aware of critical thinking skills
    • What RSS feeds are most useful to the learner? Why? Why do they think so?
    • Justify decisions around which RSS feeds are chosen
    • Post this justification on the Class blog or Wiki
  • Review reading strategies such as skimming and scanning

Delivery:

  1. Introduce the activity
    • Discuss that RSS feeds help learns to stay more current on recent developments in the field;
    • Choose a sample RSS feed and explore in pairs
  2. Do the activity
    • Examine one RSS feed together
    • Research and find at least one other RSS engineering related feed
    • Access feeds selected by classmates (in addition to the instructors list)
    • Place RSS buttons on class websites (wikis) in order to accomplish this
    • Write a summary that addresses these questions:
      • What RSS feeds are most useful to the learner? Why?
      • Why do they think so? Justify decisions around which RSS feeds are chosen.
      • Post this justification on the Class blog or Wiki
