Talking About Delicate Issues

“Talking About Delicate Issues” is an activity that utilizes podcasting to store screencasts created to talk about delicate nursing issues such as working in palliative care or supporting the bereaved. The goal of the screencasts is for learners to practice speaking skills to make introductions, conclusions, use explicit markers and appropriate vocabulary.

Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  • Adopt vocabulary related to palliative care (e.g. Bereavement, caregiver, hospice, etc)
  • Create a 4-5 minute screencast in groups of 3-4 learners (use powerpoint to outline speaking points for screencast)
  • Present information according to prescribed requirements

Preparation:

  • Review how to create a screencast
  • Discuss related vocabulary
  • Create a list of possible reference materials and resources

Delivery:

  1. Introduce the activity
    • Introduce concept of dealing with a delicate issue such as palliative care
    • Clarify expectations
      • I.e. One podcast per group; an outline of the podcast
  2. Create a screencast
    • Create groups of 3 - 4 learners to research topics chosen by class or instructor
    • Research, create an outline of information to be shared, assign speaking parts
    • Create a 4 - 5 minute screencast ensuring equal speaking time
    • Share screencast with another group for feedback; edit screencast
  3. Upload the screencast to the podcasting channel
    • View podcast with entire class
    • Use rubric to evaluate
  4. Conclude with one of these ideas
    • Summarize research (on a blog or wiki)
