Safety Concerns - Vocabulary

“Safety Concerns - Vocabulary” is an activity that utilizes www.text2Mindmap.com in order to initiate discussion around safety. It is intended as an introduction to a lesson. The mind-map assists learners to think about relationships and vocabulary.

Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  • Develop vocabulary and content knowledge related to safety in the oil/gas sector
    • Example safety at the oil rig site
  • Build a mindmap using vocabulary

Preparation:

  • Review vocabulary choice parameters
  • Identify language for students to practice while engaging in the activity
  • Develop list of research resources as they relate to safety in the oil/gas sector
  • Discuss the fact that mind-maps use a non-linear approach to learning that forces the learner to think about relationships

Delivery:

  1. Introduce the Tool
  2. Create a mindmap in pairs
    • Choose ten terms from the reference found in the “activity reference link”
    • Discuss definitions and list on mindmap
    • Divide the vocabulary into at least two groups/categories (such as safety equipment, safety rules)
    • Use these categories for the mindmap to show the relationships
    • Use related vocabulary such as density log, safety clamp, whmis, etc.
  3. Review and Provide Feedback
    • Share mindmap with another group to make and receive constructive feedback; make revisions
    • Share mindmap with another student pair; discuss how groupings were made
  4. Conclude with One of These Ideas
    • Create a class set of vocabulary related to the oil and gas industry
