Exploring Job Safety

“Exploring Job Safety” is an activity using www.prezi.com to create a presentation discussing job tasks, procedures, hazards, potential problems found in the oil and gas sector. Typically this would a major project, usually a final project for the course.

Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  • Give a 8 minute presentation describing the job tasks, procedures, hazards, potential problems found in the oil and gas sector
  • Work as a group to create a presentation
  • Develop vocabulary and content around the topic

Preparation:

  • Review presentation expectations: presents in a coherent connected discourse; uses introduction, development and conclusion, uses explicit markers and logical connectors; uses vocabulary adequately for the topic
  • Review vocabulary expected in the presentation
  • Discuss content related to the topic; possibly read related articles as found in provincial “work safe” websites
  • Discuss how to use the tool if necessary
  • List key vocabulary

Delivery:

Create an 8 minute presentation (using text, audio, video, animations, etc.) describing the job tasks, procedures, hazards, and potential problems found in the oil and gas sector

  1. Form groups of five and decide on purpose of project
    • Decide on the topic details and decide on group roles
    • Set deadlines on research, outline, progress meetings
    • Hold group meetings and write rough draft of presentation
  2. Create first draft of presentation and present to another group for feedback
    • Use an introduction, development and conclusion with explicit markers and logical connectors. Use adequate vocabulary related to the topic. Speak with appropriate eye contact, body language, etc.
  3. Give the presentation to the class; receive feedback and answer questions
