“Environmental Concerns in Oil Sector” is an activity that utilizes listening to podcasts as well as creating podcasts about environmental concerns in the oil sector.

Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  • Develop vocabulary related to environmental concerns in the oil sector;
  • Research using podcasts as one source
  • Create a 4-5 minute podcast

Preparation:

  • Talk about pragmatics language for voicing an opinion in a culturally appropriate way
  • Review the use of debate gambits such as “I see your point, but I think…”, “let me respond to that, please”, “the first point I want to discuss is…”
  • Example using this tool

Delivery:

  1. Warm-up
    • Clarify expectations
      • Listen to 2 podcasts about the same environmental topic
      • Create one podcast per group
  2. Presentation
    • Example of activity
    • Listen to at least two podcasts on environmental concerns in the oil sector in Canada
    • Find NPR Environmental Podcasts as one source to choose from
    • Develop critical listening skills by listening for objective vs. Subjective information
    • Compare and contrast the podcasts; create a table to compare
    • Differentiate between fact and fiction by creating a table with facts/opinion
    • Express personal opinion about the information by creating a reflective podcast
  3. Practice
    • Create a podcast by making an audio-recording or screencast about an environmental concern by summarizing the comparisons between the two podcasts listened to:
      • Create groups of 3 - 4 learners to research topics chosen by class or instructor
      • Research, create an outline of information to be shared, assign speaking parts
  4. Production
    • Create a 4-5 minute screencast ensuring equal speaking time
    • Share screencast with another group for feedback; edit screencast
