Communication Needs in Nursing
"Communication Needs in Nursing” is an activity that utilizes Skype where ESL learners interview nurse professionals in order to gain information around “communication in nursing”.
Outcomes:
The learner will be able to:
- Practice interview skills in an information interview
- Build oral fluency through group discussions
- Focus on using the phone to gain information
- Gain more information related to working with patients and possible challenges
Preparation:
- Create possible interview questions
- What challenges do you face when communicating with patients?
- Do you have any recommendations for us? etc.
- Identify language for students to practice while engaging in the activity
- Discuss how to take notes and summarize the information received through the interview
Delivery:
- Introduce the activity:
- Clarify participation expectations
- Introduce the web tool (see “Web Tools” for more information)
- Decide on roles (facilitator, note-takers, timekeeper, webcam operator, etc.) in this videoconferencing project
- Brainstorm:
- Interview guidelines (rules of brainstorming)
- Information interview questions
- Hold Skype call:
- Ask questions
- Take notes during the call so that a written submission can be made
- Submit the completed summary after the interview call electronically
- Conclude with one of these ideas:
- Post summary of interview answers on the class wiki
- Plan another Skype call with another engineer
