“Using Audiopal to Gain More Information” is an activity creating an audio-recording to pose questions and provide answers regarding the job of a roughneck. The focus is to speak clearly and concisely when asking questions and then to provide answers to a partner.

Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  • Speak clearly and concisely using an audio-recording
    • One audio-recording presenting problem and answers
    • One audio-recording providing feedback
  • Provide feedback appropriately using target language structures

Preparation:

  • Consider pragmatics language for giving feedback in culturally appropriate way
  • Discuss vocabulary considerations such as providing feedback appropriately. For example:
    • “I feel that your answer is interesting.”
  • Discuss audio-recording expectations as to length, vocabulary used, and content
  • How to do research about the job of a roughneck

Delivery:

  1. Introduce the tool if necessary
    • Clarify participation expectations
      • Grading criteria
      • i.e. one audio-recording; one feedback recording
    • Discuss pronunciation expectations
  2. Create questions in order to learn more about the roughneck job
    • Using Audiopal to record; for example:
      • What is the most important task that a roughneck does?
      • What personal qualities are important for this job?
      • What training should a roughneck have?
  3. Send these questions to a partner to answer
  4. The partner sends a reply or response back to their partner using audiopal
    • Answer further questions (if a further message is needed)
  5. Rate responses using a rubric if desired
  6. Incorporate certain vocabulary in the questions and the responses
    • Encourage using conversation gambits such as using “clarification phrases” such as the following:
      • Say “sorry, but I don’t see what you mean by your statement about this job.”
      Use “could you be more specific?” or “could you explain that in more detail?”
    Practice “do you mean…?”
