Safety Concerns and Language

“Safety Concerns and Language” is an activity utilizing www.vimeo.com where learners can share video resources they have created regarding safety in the workplace.

Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  • Develop vocabulary and content knowledge related to safety in the oil/gas sector
  • Example safety at the oil rig site
  • Build oral fluency through creating a screencast or video based on safety

Preparation:

  • Review vocabulary choice parameters
  • Identify language for students to practice while engaging in the activity
  • Develop list of research resources as they relate to safety in the oil/ gas sector
    • Provide necessary (target) support language (pragmatics) learners can focus attention on providing feedback appropriately. For example, “I feel that your website 'X' is interesting”
    • Giving and opinion; Summarizing point

Delivery:

  1. Warm-Up
    • Introduce the Tool:
      • Clarify participation expectations; grading criteria
  2. Presentation
    • Decide on purpose of video (e.g. Summary of safety issues at oil rig sites)
    • Divide class into groups to work on each section of the video
    • Do research on the content for the creation of the video
    • Decide on how to present information, for example as in a debate
  3. Practice
    • Review and Provide Feedback
    • Do a practice run to an audience to receive constructive feedback; make revisions
    • By breaking into groups to discuss the video, give your questions, share list of vocabulary words
  4. Production
    • Create a set of questions/ answers based on the video
    • Write a summary that recommends this video to the next class
