Record a Summary About the Job

“Record a Summary about the Job” is an activity that utilizes www.audiopal.com to create an audio-recording talking about an article summary. The objective of the audio-recording is to encourage learners to speak clearly and concisely about the job of a “roughneck“.

Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  • Speak clearly and concisely
  • Share opinions using language that are culturally appropriate
  • Develop vocabulary related to the reading
  • List qualities, technical skills and working conditions required to be a roughneck

Preparation:

  • Review the related pragmatics language for giving feedback in culturally appropriate way
  • Discuss audio-recording expectations as to length, vocabulary used, and content
  • Review (if necessary) how to use reading strategies such as finding the main idea in reading and how to summarize
  • Example:

Delivery:

  1. Introduce the tool if necessary
    • Clarify participation expectations
      • i.e. one audio-recording; one feedback recording
  2. Create an audio-recording to provide an introduction or review of a unit on oil rigs. Do this to create an audio-recording related to this activity:
    • Read an article such as the one indicated in the Links below found at the Alberta Oil Careers website
    • Record a 1 minute summary of the content and send to the instructor (It would be helpful for students to make notes as they read and write summary before recording.) List qualities required to be a roughneck; and include working conditions.
    • Example
    • Consider possible text for recording: “Working on drilling rigs is a physically demanding job, with long hours, hard work. Working happens despite Alberta’s extreme weather conditions. Workers, other than the drillers are called ‘roughnecks’. Drilling rigs normally run twenty four hours a day until the well is finished. The crews usually work twelve hour shifts.”
    • Use related vocabulary such as “roughneck, boom,” etc.
  3. Provide feedback to partner by creating a 2nd audio-recording; email to partner and instructor
    • Provide necessary (target) support language (pragmatics) learners can/should practice/focus attention on:
      • Providing feedback appropriately. For example, “I feel that your proposed solution is interesting.” Or “Have you thought about these factors?”
      • Giving an opinion
