Interviewing an Internationally Educated Engineer

“Interviewing an Internationally Educated Engineer” is an activity that utilizes Skype to interview an Internationally Educated Engineer to gain information about how to find a job in the Canadian engineering field.

Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  • Practice interview skills in an information interview
  • Build oral fluency through group discussions

Preparation:

  • Create possible interview questions
  • Identify language for students to practice while engaging in the activity
    • What were the challenges you faced as you re-entered your profession in Canada?
    • Do you have any recommendations for us?
  • Discuss how to take notes and summarize the information received through the interview

Delivery:

  1. Warm-Up
    • Clarify expectations
    • Introduce the Web Tool (see "Web Tools" for more information)
  2. Presentation
    • Decide on roles (facilitator, note-takers, etc.) In this videoconferencing project
    • Review interview guidelines to used while holding a Skype conversation (session)
    • List interview questions that can be used during the Skype session
  3. Practice
    • Hold Skype call and ask questions
    • Take notes during the call so that a written submission can be made
    • Submit the completed summary after the interview call - electronically
  4. Production
    • Post summary of interview answers on the class wiki
    • Plan another Skype call with another engineer
