“Giving Instructions to a Patient” is an activity creating an audio-recording to give medical instructions to someone else, similar to being on the telephone. The focus is to speak clearly and concisely with emphasis on pronunciation.
Outcomes:
The learner will be able to:
- Speak clearly and concisely using an audio-recording
- One audio-recording presenting instructions
- One audio-recording providing feedback
- Give medical instructions clearly conveying the sequence of steps, using clear reference, precise vocabulary, correct stress and intonation); listener can follow the instructions
- Provide feedback appropriately using target language structures
Preparation:
- Review how to give directions using discourse markers (e.g. how to treat a burn)
- work on being precise when speaking (only have 1 minute to record)
- speak clearly with a focus on pronunciation
- Review content knowledge and vocabulary required to do this task. (Vocabulary examples: compresses, ointment, infection, etc.)
- Discuss audio-recording expectations as to length, vocabulary used, and content
- How to choose a problem and present it with a solution
Delivery:
- Introduce the tool if necessary
- Clarify participation expectations:
- Grading criteria; i.e. one audio-recording; one feedback recording

- Record explanations (up to 1 minute) to a parent (the instructor) of a child about how to take care of a first degree burn.
