Explain a 'How to' Related to Engineering

“Explain a 'How to' Related to Engineering” is an activity that utilizes Screencast-O-Matic.com (SOM) in order to make a screencast using a PowerPoint Presentation about an engineering related topic such as how oil is refined.

Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  • Create a PowerPoint
  • Create a screencast using the PowerPoint
  • Outline points related to topic as in “how oil is refined” or “steps in writing a progress report”

Preparation:

  • Note instructor needs to create a screencast from a PowerPoint as an example
  • Use PowerPoint to create the initial explanation of the steps in writing a progress report

Delivery:

  1. Warm-up
    • Teach the tool if necessary
  2. Presentation
    • Set the parameters for the activity: recording should be no more than 3 minutes; must include at least two photos; can use PowerPoint if desired
  3. Practice
    • Create (in pairs) an 'how to' for future engineering students
    • Use these possible topics:
      • “How oil is refined” or
      • “Steps in writing a progress report”
    • Create screencasts in groups
    • Share screencast with other groups for peer review
    • Revise screencast taking into consideration peer comments for improvement
  4. Production
    • Present as public speaking activity
