Concept Introduction

"Concept Introduction” is an activity using a Wiki to introduce a new engineering concept for class. Reading the information found in a Wiki before class can save much class time. Another option is for learners to post information to a class Wiki about the same engineering information.

Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  • Use a Wiki to enter information about an engineering concept such as building tunnels
  • Develop vocabulary related to the topic of tunnels
  • Present information and ideas by writing two or three paragraphs; provide detailed description

Preparation:

  • Introduce related vocabulary
  • Identify language for students to practice while engaging in the brainstorming activity
  • Wikispaces example

Delivery:

  1. Introduce the activity
    • Introduce concept of writing in a wiki; introduce wiki tool
    • Clarify expectations
      • Grading criteria
      • I.e. One posting in wiki (each learner could have their own page)
    • Wikispaces example
    • Create the activity by:
      • Creating learner groups
      • Brainstorm sections for wiki writing
  2. Do the activity
    • Introduce a new concept in engineering such as “building tunnels”
    • Create a related glossary list with illustrations and definitions added by the class (using original digital photos or those from other online creative commons sources, such as Flickr). Link to separate pages with detailed information would allow the main glossary list to remain reasonably short.
    • Add related images for each section
    • Present information and ideas by writing two or three paragraphs; provide detailed description
    • Create a “Question and Answer” section; each learner submits one question with its answer
  3. Conclude with one of these ideas
    • Research further and create a summary and post in the wiki
    • Encourage peer editing for best writing
