Building Bridges in Engineering

“Building Bridges in Engineering” is an activity that utilizes Flickr.com to find images and Dropbox.com to share images that can be used to develop vocabulary and further discussion.

Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

  • Develop vocabulary related to building bridges
  • Create information questions

Preparation:

  • Discuss expectations and learning outcomes

Delivery:

  1. Warm-up
    • Teach the tool if necessary
    • Discuss “creative comments” as it relates to copyrighted images
  2. Presentation
    • Search for photos and place them in the Dropbox.com
  3. Practice
    • Choose a topic related to their engineering discipline such as 'building bridges' and find different designs of bridges in Canada and place them in the Dropbox
    • Categorize the photos as to design of bridges
    • Create “information” questions about the photos or images individually or in groups for class discussion
    • Discuss in groups the differences between photos of bridge designs
  4. Production
    • Describe the difference between the bridges by giving a 1 minute description using Audiopal.com (or)
    • Summarize the descriptions in one or two paragraphs (or)
    • Develop reports from observations and discussions
