Prescription Data Entry Practice
The purpose of the Order Entry Database is to allow students to become familiar with reading a prescription and accurately inputting information from a prescription into a computer.
This activity is not for marks. It is used to develop the ability to interpret a prescription and determine the directions, days supply, and quantity to dispense; the patient, drug, and prescriber must also be entered into the correct fields in the database.
The following fields are required for each prescription entered:
- Patient demographics
- Name (first and last), PHN and DOB
- Complete address and phone number
- Allergies
- Drug information
- Prescriber demographics
- Name (first and last), license number
- Address
- Phone and fax numbers
- Prescription information
- Correct drug/strength
- Correct directions
- Correct quantity
- Correct days supply
The patient and prescriber lists, provided in class, contain information needed to populate the database. In community pharmacy practice demographic information is gathered from the patient or patient’s agent. If there is a discrepancy between the prescription and the attached lists, use the information on the list.
The goal is to achieve 100% accuracy. If an error is made, there will be an opportunity to correct it.
