Assignment 1: Prescription Entry

You will be required complete a mock computer order entry assignment. The purpose of the assignment is to get familiar with reading a prescription and accurately transcribing the information from the prescription to a computer.

You will be given 3 hours to enter 20 prescriptions and you must achieve a mark of 100%. You will be required to enter the following information from the prescription into the appropriate computer fields:

• patient's name
• patient's address
• patient's date of birth
• patient's phone number
• patient's PHN
• allergies
• physician's name
• physician's address
• physician's phone number
• physician's fax number
• physician's license number
• correct drug/strength
• correct directions
• correct quantity
• correct days supply

You must achieve 100% accuracy to pass the assignment. You will be given three hours to enter the data into the interactive database. If you make an error, you will have opportunity during the three hour time period to correct the error. At the end of three hours, you must hand in a print out indicating you have achieved 100% accuracy on all 20 prescriptions.

You will use the prescriber and patient lists included in the lab manual under the heading "Assignment 1" to complete the prescription entry assignment.

Note that in actual practice you would be able to get patient demographics from the patient or patient's agent.

In addition, other actions must be taken prior to the prescription being filled including:

• ensuring the pharmacist as checked the prescription for therapeutic appropriateness
• alerting the pharmacist to any drug interaction/allergy alerts
• and ensuring that all legal requirements have been satisfied.

Tips for Completing Assignment 1

It is very important that you enter the data into the fields exactly as per the following parameters:

• Enter the information exactly as it appears on the prescription. This includes capitalization and punctuation.
• The month must be entered in the format of dd/mm/yyyy. (Example: Oct 1, 1978, 01/10/1978)
• When entering quantity and days supply, only the numeric value is entered. (Example: 15 mls is entered as 15)
• The drug name and directions (sig) have an auto-complete function. Type the first few letters of the word in the data entry field and a drop down list will appear from which you can choose the correct answer.
