Early Learning and Child Care 2016-17

The Centre for Growth and Harmony

Welcome to the Centre for Growth and Harmony, which offers holistic student-centered care within an inclusive, respectful, and private environment.

In the Centre you will find a multidisciplinary team of registered psychologists, registered social workers, a registered psychiatric nurse, and a licensed practical nurse. This team of professionals is dedicated to promoting health and wellness while striving to encourage growth, development, and lifelong learning.

On your first visit to the Centre for Growth and Harmony, you will be seen individually by a wellness team professional who will work with you to identify the services that best match your needs. Options for support may include services through The Centre for Growth and Harmony, referrals to other campus resources, or referrals to providers in the community if services needed are not offered on campus.

The intake worker will ask questions about your reasons for seeking assistance and your history. They will also explain our commitment to your privacy.

Your first visit also gives you an opportunity to talk about any immediate concerns, discuss strategies and/or recommendations for feeling better, and receive some support. Together, we will help you come up with a plan for your next steps.

Visitors who are looking for health support will be directed to a nurse.

If you do not have an appointment, you will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mental Health Support

Personal well-being is important to academic success. At NorQuest we understand that college can be stressful and that many students experience difficulties during their studies. Our professional mental health services are offered free of charge and in a private setting to NorQuest students, and can help you deal with personal concerns that may be affecting your studies or personal well-being.

We’ll work with you to explore what’s happening in your life and help you identify positive coping strategies. We offer individual services as well as free group workshops (link to workshops page) and presentations designed to help you be successful from classroom to future employment. Our Wellness Team can also link you with mental health support and services in the community if more specialized, or long-term therapy, is a better fit for you.

Newcomer Support

We value being part of an inclusive, student-centered community and recognize the diversity of cultures and ethnicities that our students bring to NorQuest College.

Adapting to a new culture and country can be very challenging for many students. It’s normal to feel a range of emotions when you first arrive in Canada including discomfort, helplessness, frustration and uncertainty. It is common for your first few months to be full of change and feelings of stress, and as a newcomer, you may face many challenges as you try to improve language skills and further your education.

Having access to adequate supports can aid in student success, and we’re here to help you discover supportive resources both on and off campus to ensure you have the tools to succeed in your education.

There are a variety of settlement agencies and supports in Edmonton that offer information, orientation, and referrals to community resources. This assistance is available to people of all cultures, religions, and immigration categories.

Common concerns that newcomers experience include:

Basic Needs & Community Support

As a student, there may be challenges in your personal life that can impact your performance in school. A strong social support network can help you persevere through difficult times and is a good investment in your overall health and wellness.

Community connections are particularly effective in helping students cope with stress, and we can help you develop your own personal resources and supportive networks. Assistance with system navigation and referrals to government or community support services is also available.

We've gathered some community resources (links to community resource page) that can assist you in ensuring your basic needs are met so you can concentrate on your education. These resources can support your mental health, self-care, and overall student experience.
